“Why?”

I opened the envelope.
Walter’s handwriting filled the page.

I looked at Roman.

He looked at Denise.

Denise ignored him.

“Roman, did you personally witness any indication that your mother was mentally incapable of managing her affairs?”
Roman shook his head.

“Then why did you sign the affidavit?”
“Aunt Denise told me she needed it.”
Denise interrupted.
“This is ridiculous. Eleanor is ninety years old.”
I opened my purse again.
Then I placed Walter’s living trust on the table.
Nobody spoke.

“I am the sole trustee and beneficiary.”

I looked directly at Denise.

Denise stared at Bennett.

I almost smiled.
“I expected that.”

Denise froze.

The room went silent.

I slid it across the table toward Denise.
