I thought buying a second dress was a small price to pay for keeping the peace at my son’s wedding.
Then I arrived at the venue and saw something that made me wonder whether his new family even considered me part of theirs.

My son, Grant, had always been the peaceful one.

Even as a boy, he hated arguments. If two friends fought over a game, Grant was usually the person trying to calm everyone down.

That part of him never disappeared as he grew older.

He rarely raised his voice, avoided unnecessary disagreements, and almost always preferred compromise over confrontation.

For years, I considered that one of his greatest qualities.

Then he met Vanessa.

Vanessa was almost his opposite.

She was confident, outspoken, and very clear about what she wanted.

If a restaurant brought her the wrong meal, she sent it back.

If plans changed without warning, everyone knew exactly how she felt about it.

At first, I thought their differences balanced each other perfectly.

Vanessa encouraged Grant to speak up.

Grant seemed to soften some of her sharper edges.

A week before the wedding, Vanessa called me.

I was sitting at my kitchen table drinking coffee when her name appeared on my phone.

“Joan, would you mind not wearing blue to the wedding?”

The request caught me off guard.

I had already purchased a navy dress.

“Oh, no. The dress is beautiful,” Vanessa said quickly. “Blue is just part of the wedding color palette, and I’m worried it might look strange in the pictures.”

And Grant was getting married.

I didn’t want a dress to become an unnecessary source of tension.

So I bought another one.

Spending the extra money irritated me, but I reminded myself that I was doing it for my son.

They even had coordinated corsages.

I tried telling myself there must be a reasonable explanation.

Before the ceremony, I found Vanessa surrounded by relatives and friends.

She shifted slightly.

So I walked away.

I smiled when guests greeted me.

I tried convincing myself the entire blue-dress situation was simply wedding nonsense.

After the ceremony, the photographer began arranging everyone for family pictures.

“She’s stressed. It’s our wedding.”

“Grant, look at me.”

Eventually, he did.

Something in his expression bothered me.

Frustration.

Embarrassment.

Maybe something deeper.

“Are you actually happy?”

For just a moment, it looked as though he wanted to answer honestly.

Then Vanessa appeared.

“There you are! Grant, seriously? I’ve been looking everywhere. We’re already behind schedule.”

Then she turned toward me and laughed.

“And Joan, could you stop stealing my groom?”

A couple of nearby guests laughed along with her.

Grant didn’t.

He simply followed Vanessa back into the reception.

I stood in the hallway for a moment wondering whether I should go after him.

Part of me wanted to take my son outside and ask him one more time what was happening.

But I hesitated.

Maybe I was being overly protective.

Maybe wedding stress was making everything seem worse than it really was.

So I returned to my table.

For the next twenty minutes, I watched Vanessa happily talking with her relatives.

Her mother sat nearby in that blue gown, chatting with the other women wearing the same color.

Grant barely spoke.

He answered people when they addressed him directly, but something had changed.

His shoulders were tense.

His smile disappeared whenever he thought nobody was watching.

Every instinct I had as his mother told me something was wrong.

Then I heard a spoon tap against a champagne glass.

The room slowly became quiet.

I looked up.

Grant was standing.

Vanessa looked surprised.

“I’d like to make a toast,” he announced.

Then he looked directly at me.

And that was when I realized how angry he was.

His tie had been loosened.

His face was flushed.

His hand gripped the glass tightly.

The guests smiled, expecting some sweet speech from the groom.

“No,” Grant replied. “It became a tradition last month.”

His eyes filled with tears.
