My ten-year-old daughter stopped answering my calls for three days. I drove to her mother’s house and hopped their fence and found my girl l0cked inside a metal ca:g:e. I broke the lock, but Emily pointed to the murky pool. “Daddy, don’t look,” she cried. I quickly jumped into the pool to check. I panicked and dialed 911.

Maya reached out from beneath the foil, grabbing my hand with a desperate grip. “Please don’t make me go back inside, Daddy. Please.”

I knelt down, pressing my forehead against hers. “You are never going back in there, sweetheart. I swear on my life.”

While the EMTs started an IV of fluids, a seasoned patrol officer approached me. He was taking notes, his face grim. He had already seen the photographs his colleagues had taken of the broken cage, the shattered padlock, and the horrific state of the yard.
