The room went quiet when I placed the ultrasound photo on the coffee table. My husband, Aleric, looked at it, then at me, while his mother stood beside the bassinet holding the three-month-old baby he had brought into our Greenwich home only days earlier.

I gestured to the black folder with a tilt of my head. “Open it.”

Aleric’s hands shook so badly he could barely pry the folder open. He stared at
the documents inside.

“The first document is a forensic authentication report from the top handwriting
analyst in the state, proving the signature on your liability transfer is a
digital forgery,” I narrated, my voice echoing in the quiet room. “The second
document is a fully executed, non-prosecution federal immunity agreement
provided by the United States Department of Justice. I signed it this morning.”
