“Take the charge for your sister!” Dad roared. “She has a career. You’re expendable.” Mom shoved the confession at me. My sister laughed. “Just sign it, loser.”

“I had looked at my phone. There were questions afterward about how I reported it and whether I’d been honest about what happened.”

“What did Mom tell you?”

“She told me that I’d had a rough week and made a mistake and needed a character reference.”
