The first thing everyone noticed was the absence of food.

There would be brisket resting beneath aluminum foil, pork shoulder cooling in its juices, macaroni and cheese browning in the oven, jalapeño corn warming in a casserole dish, and tres leches cake chilling in the refrigerator with caramel running down its sides.
