At sixty-seven, Mrs. Clara Vance arrived at the OB-GYN’s office claiming she was nine months pregnant. The doctor turned on the ultrasound, looked at the screen… and the blood drained from his face. Outside, her adult children were waiting in the lobby, subtly snickering at their mother’s “delusion.” No one imagined that her swollen belly was hiding something far worse than an impossible pregnancy.

“Just paperwork to help take care of you, Mom.”

“Lies.”

She leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a cold whisper. “You’re barely surviving an impossible medical crisis and you’re still trying to fight us? Do you see why we need to control your affairs?”

Before I could scream at her, the orderly pushed my gurney forward. They wheeled me away to the operating room with her venomous words lodged deep in my throat.
