“My father is dead.”
Then the main gate creaked.
Everyone turned around.

Thomas felt his legs give out.
He had seen that face in old photographs. In family portraits. In the locket his father kept in a drawer and never allowed anyone to touch.
“Uncle Leonard…” he whispered.
The old man stopped in front of them.

Oliver stepped back.

Thomas looked at Mary.

Leonard lowered his head.

The two armed men raised their guns.

Leonard struck the ground with his cane.

Oliver lost his color.
“What did you do?” he asked, looking at Mary.

The armed men dropped their guns.

Oliver looked at his brother.
“You don’t understand anything. Mary is using you.”

Two agents approached.
Oliver tried to maintain his dignity. He straightened his shirt. He lifted his chin.

According to the document, Leonard had disappeared after a family dispute. Albert took advantage of his absence and bribed an official to register a fake death certificate.
Years later, consumed by guilt, he decided to repair the damage. He drafted a will leaving his share of the ranch to Thomas and Mary, on the condition that they recognize Leonard’s rights if he ever returned.
Oliver found a copy and realized he would only receive a small plot of land.

“How did you locate Leonard?” Thomas asked.
