When I found out I was pregnant, my parents tried to force me to hand over my baby because my sister had recently miscarried. They told me, “It’s only right to give her your child to make up for her loss.” When I said no, my mother kicked me right in the stomach and shrieked, “This baby belongs to your sister!”

“This is conspiracy,” she said. “At minimum, custodial interference. Depending on execution, kidnapping.”

The word sat heavily in the room. Kidnapping. A word from news stories. A word that did not belong beside cribs and ultrasound photos.

“What do we do?” I asked.
