“It was only a joke,” my sister laughed as guests helped me out of the pool. She knew I could not swim, yet she dismissed the entire incident as harmless fun.

I pushed it away.

“That is not what happened.”

“It is a less emotional description,” Malcolm said.

“It is a lie.”

“It prevents a family accident from becoming an accusation against a seventeen-year-old.”

“She pushed me.”

Lorraine stood near the kitchen counter with folded arms.

“Your father and I are paying the deposit on your apartment when classes begin. We are covering part of your tuition. We are not financing someone determined to ruin her sister.”
