I lied to my dad and told him I’d bombed the entrance exam, even though my score was in the 98.7th percentile. He just replied, “Get out of the house.” I didn’t cry. I didn’t beg. Because I already knew that place was never a real home… it was just a trap waiting for my signature.

“Did I know?” The question wasn’t for me. It was for herself.

Evelyn turned around furiously. “I did it all for you.”

Harper cried. “Don’t use me to steal.”

That sentence hit Evelyn harder than any insult.

My dad was arrested that night for attempted fraud and use of a forged document. Evelyn also gave a statement. I don’t know how much of what she said was the truth and how much was just to save herself.
