My husband promised to pick me up after the ER discharged me. Instead, I stepped into the hospital pickup lane and found a text: he’d already left for his parents’ anniversary trip, and I should call a ride.

Silence.

Only a couple seconds.

Long enough.

“Leah—”

“Did you?”

“I told them you understood.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He exhaled.

“Yes.”

I looked toward the bedroom doorway.

My tan weekend bag still sat where I had dragged it.

“Why?”

“Because Mom was already making this into a thing. I didn’t want everybody spending the weekend angry at you.”
