Dad dropped back into his chair as though his knees had stopped working.
Nobody spoke.
The banker continued.
“The signature submitted this morning does not match your authorization record. We are treating the transfer as unauthorized.”
Kayla turned toward Dad.
“You forged her name?”
Dad looked at me.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?” I asked. “After the flight landed?”
Mom grabbed his arm.
“Richard, what did you do?”
He snapped, “I did what I had to do. Natalie never says no when it matters.”
And there it was.
Not love.
Expectation.
The banker explained that the charge had been stopped and that the travel agency would cancel the Hawaii package unless another verified account paid the balance by the following morning.
Kayla stared at me in disbelief.
“You’re ruining everything.”

She started crying.
