“Yes.”

“I know.”

“No.”
That was the most honest answer I had.
Then I said,
“But I’m twenty-nine years old, I have no dependents, and I’m about to watch five siblings get placed in three different cars. I don’t think I can just stand there and let that happen.”
“Twenty-nine,” she said.
“What?”
“You said thirty.”
“Right.”

Then she said,
“I’ll help you.”

For the next nine days, I worked.
I converted the workshop.
I built two sets of bunk beds myself.

I bought five car seats.

The agency had agreed to support my application, provided I passed an emergency home study.

She walked through my house with a clipboard.

Then she stood inside the converted workshop and looked at the bunk beds.

“I can’t undo what happened to them. I can’t promise I’ll do this perfectly. But I can give them a home where Marcus doesn’t have to be the adult.”
Judge Miller didn’t interrupt.
“The alternative is three homes in three counties,” I said. “They’ve already lost their mother. I don’t want them to lose each other too.”
Then I said the sentence I meant most.
“I’m not saying I can do this perfectly. I’m saying I can do it.”
Silence.
Judge Miller looked at me for a long time.
Then he said,

“Yes, sir.”
“Do you understand that if this adoption is eventually finalized, you will become legally, financially, and morally responsible for these children until adulthood? There is no convenient exit if this becomes difficult.”
“Yes.”
“And you are prepared to accept that responsibility?”
I looked at Marcus.
“Yes.”
Judge Miller turned toward the children.
He studied them for several seconds.
Then he looked at the paperwork.
“I’ve been doing this work for thirty-one years,” he said.
His voice changed slightly.
“I have seen many people sitting where you are sitting, for many reasons. Some good. Some not.”
He paused.
“I am approving the placement, subject to the required review periods and continued agency supervision. You will have support, Mr. Carter. You are not expected to do this alone.”
Then he signed.
Rachel touched my arm.
Behind me, Debra quietly explained what had happened.
Marcus asked,
“We’re all going?”
Debra answered,
“You’re all going.”
There was silence.
Then Marcus made a sound I still cannot properly describe.
Relief, maybe.
Or the sound of someone who had been holding his breath for three weeks finally letting it out.
That afternoon, all six of us drove home in my truck.
I had practiced the car-seat configuration in the parking lot the day before.
The vehicle was louder than any vehicle I had ever driven.
Destiny cried for twenty minutes.
Joel announced everything he saw out the window as though reporting live news.
Marcus stayed silent.
He sat beside Amara and watched the city pass.
When I pulled into the driveway, I began unloading everyone.
Marcus got out last.
He stood there staring at my house.
“This is it?”
“This is it.”
He studied the house.
“Can I see the bedroom?”
I took him inside.
The converted workshop had the bunk beds, five sets of bedding, low shelves for books and toys, and labeled storage.
Marcus stood in the doorway for a long time.
“You built those?”
“Yes.”
“They’re good.”
“Thank you.”
Then he looked at me.
“You don’t have to do this.”
That surprised me.
I sat on the bottom bunk so we were at the same height.
“No,” I said. “I don’t.”
He watched me.
“But I’m going to.”
“Why?”
“Because you need someone to. Because I can. And because I want to.”
He stayed still.
“Is it because we were going to get split up?”
“That’s part of it.”
“What’s the other part?”
He was seven years old.
And he had just asked me the same question the judge had asked.
So I gave him the same truth.
“Because you’ve been holding everyone together for three weeks, and you shouldn’t have to do that alone.”
He looked at the floor.
Then he whispered,
“I’m tired.”
“I know.”
“Not sleepy tired.”
“I know.”
He struggled for the words.
“Like… tired.”
“Like you’ve been responsible for more than you should have been.”
He nodded.
“Yeah.”
“You can still help your brothers and sisters,” I said. “You’re their oldest brother. That matters. But you don’t have to be their parent anymore.”
Then Amara appeared in the doorway.
Joel was behind her.
Destiny behind him.
Amara pointed at the beds.
“Are those ours?”
“Yes. Each one has your name.”
She found hers and sat down.
Joel found his.
Destiny immediately tried climbing toward the top bunk and had to be redirected.
Then Nina toddled into the room.
She turned slowly, looking at everything.
Finally, she pointed toward the smallest bed placed close to the floor.
“Ni-ni.”
“That one’s yours.”
She walked over and placed both hands on the mattress.
I sat beside Marcus.
He watched his siblings settle around the room.
Then he said,
“Okay.”
Not exactly to me.
To everything.
“Okay,” I answered.
That was the first night.
And the first night was chaos.
Destiny woke around two.
Before I reached her, she woke Nina.
Nina woke Joel.
By 2:30 in the morning, all five children were sitting in the living room watching cartoons because every more responsible parenting strategy had already failed.
Marcus came out last.
He looked at the room.
“I usually handle this.”
“Not anymore.”
He stared at me.
Then he sat on the couch and watched cartoons.
That was when the real work began.
I had known parenting would be difficult.
I just hadn’t known specifically how.
That difference turned out to be enormous.
I learned that Joel needed warnings before transitions.
You couldn’t simply tell him it was time to leave.

The agency continued visiting every two weeks.

They interviewed me.
They interviewed the children separately.
They looked at the house.

I expected those reports to be cautious.

One afternoon, Debra stood near my front door after finishing a visit.

I thought about that for a long time.
Six months after the first hearing, we went back to court.

It was a Tuesday morning in November.

We signed the papers.

You simply receive it.
A year after the first hearing, we were eating Sunday dinner at Dana’s house.
She looked around the table.
“You did it.”
“I’m doing it.”
“You survived the hardest part.”
“The hardest part is every part.”
She thought about it.
“Fair.”
That spring, Marcus had his first sleepover at a friend’s house.
Leaving home overnight was hard for him.
We didn’t rush it.
When he finally went, he called around ten.
“Everything okay?”
“Everything is fine.”
“Destiny didn’t get into anything?”
“Destiny is asleep.”
“She’s usually not asleep this early.”
“She is tonight.”
I smiled.
“Go enjoy yourself. I’ve got it.”

That was the goal.
On the first anniversary of the day I brought them home, I made a chocolate cake.
It wasn’t fancy.
But all five children agreed on chocolate, which I considered a remarkable achievement in diplomacy.
We sat around the table.

And I was glad it had.
Marcus looked at me.

He said it like a factual statement.
