I crouched in front of her.

Sophie shook her head.
“No. I was cold in the hallway, so she gave it to me. My teacher was standing right there.”
That eased some of my panic.
Sophie handed me the sweater.
“Did I do something bad?”
“No, honey. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
I turned the collar over.

Around nine o’clock, she kissed Mom on the cheek and headed for the door.

Then Sophie pointed toward the sweater.
“Dolly said you should look inside.”
I stared at her.
“Inside where?”
“Under the flower.”
She showed me a tiny seam hidden beneath the sunflower.
I had never noticed it before.
Carefully, I pulled one loose thread free and slipped two fingers into the opening.
Something solid touched my fingertip.
I pulled it out.
A tiny wooden sunflower charm fell into my palm.
My knees nearly gave out.
“Grandma?”
I couldn’t stop staring at it.
When Laura and I were children, Dad used to carve wooden flowers for us.
Mine was a daisy.
Laura’s was a sunflower.

The night she disappeared.
Dad had been standing beneath the porch light with the little wooden sunflower clenched tightly in his hand.
“Why are you crying?” Sophie whispered.
I swallowed.
“Because your great-grandfather had this the night my sister disappeared.”
Sophie stared at the charm.
“Then how did Dolly get it?”
“I don’t know.”
For forty years, those three words had controlled my life.

I called Sophie’s mother and asked her to come home early.
Then I grabbed the sweater and drove straight to Sophie’s school.
At the front desk, I asked for Dolly.
The receptionist told me she was finishing her shift nearby.

Five minutes later, a woman in her thirties came through the double doors pushing a cleaning cart.
The moment she saw me, she stopped.
Her eyes immediately dropped to the sweater folded across my arm.
“You must be Emelia.”
I didn’t like that she already knew my name.
“You gave this to Sophie. My granddaughter.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Dolly glanced toward the office staff.
“Could we go somewhere more private?”
“No.”
Her eyebrows rose.
“I’ve spent forty years waiting for people to tell me the truth. You can start right here.”
She swallowed.
I raised the wooden charm.
“Who gave you this sweater?”
“My mother.”
“What’s her name?”
She hesitated.
I stepped closer.
“Please don’t make me drag every answer out of you.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Laura.”
I studied her face.
She didn’t look exactly like my sister.
But now that I knew, I could see something familiar.
“Laura is your mother?”
“Yes.”
My heart seemed to stop.
“She’s alive?”
“Yes.”
I sat down.
For forty years, I had imagined every possible ending to Laura’s story.
Not one of them looked like this.
“And Thomas?” I asked. “Is he your father?”
“Yes. They stayed together for a few years.”
I looked down at the sweater.
“And Laura still never came home?”
Dolly inhaled slowly.
“She did.”
My head snapped up.
“When?”
“1992.”
Six years after she disappeared.
Laura had been twenty-two.
“How do you know?”
“Because she brought me with her.”
I stared at Dolly.
“What?”
“I was two. I don’t remember the visit myself.”
“Then tell me only what Laura told you. Don’t fill in anything you don’t know.”
Dolly nodded.
“She said my father, Thomas, came to your house on your sixteenth birthday. His family was moving away, and he asked her to leave with them.”
“She just walked away?”
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your father caught them outside.”
My fingers tightened around the sweater.
“What happened?”
“Mom said they argued. Your father told her that if she walked away with Thomas, she shouldn’t expect to come home again.”
I could hear Dad saying those words in my imagination.
Not because I had heard them before.
Because they sounded exactly like something he would have said.
“What did Laura do?”
“She thought he was bluffing.”
“And?”
“She left.”
I looked away.
For decades, I had convinced myself someone must have taken my sister.
I had never seriously considered that she had left willingly after an argument, believing she could fix everything later.
“How long did she stay with Thomas?”
“A few years. I was born when Mom was twenty.”
“What happened between them?”
“They grew up. Mom eventually wanted to stop running. Thomas didn’t.”
“And that’s when she came back?”
“Not right away. By then, going home meant admitting she had made a terrible mistake.”
I understood that more than I wanted to.
“So what changed in 1992?”
“Me.”
Dolly’s voice became softer.
“Becoming a mother made her understand what your mother must have gone through.”
My throat tightened.
“So she brought you home.”
“Yes. I was two.”
“What did she expect?”
“She thought your mother would answer the door.”
“Was Mom there?”
“No. Neither were you.”
I leaned closer.
“Then who answered?”
“Your father.”
A chill moved through me.
Dad had always claimed he never saw Laura again after the night she disappeared.
Dolly didn’t need to say anything else.
“What did he do?”
“He told her she couldn’t come back.”
I stood immediately.
“No.”
“Emelia…”
“He wouldn’t have done that without telling Mom.”
Dolly’s expression told me otherwise.
“Did Laura try again?”
“Not at the house.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed him.”
“Believed what?”
“That all of you had finally moved on. That coming back would only hurt the family again.”
I stared at her.
“Did Dad tell her I said that?”
“Mom never told me his exact words.”
“Then don’t guess.”
Dolly nodded.
I picked up the sweater.
“Where is Laura now?”
“Nearby.”
My heartbeat grew louder.
“Does she know you gave Sophie this sweater?”
Dolly looked at the floor.
That was my answer.
“No,” she admitted.
I laughed once, although nothing was funny.
“You thought that after forty years you could hand my granddaughter an old sweater and let me solve the mystery myself?”
“I’ve been asking Mom to contact you for years. Sophie’s class had family trees hanging on the wall. I saw hers while I was cleaning and realized who she was.”
“That still wasn’t your decision to make.”
“I know.”
“One more thing. Did Laura ever tell you where this charm came from?”
Dolly nodded.
“She said your father gave it back to her when she came home.”
I froze.
Dad had held that charm the night Laura disappeared.
If Laura had possessed it afterward, then Dad had absolutely seen her again.
There was no doubt anymore.
Dolly watched me pick up my bag.
“Where are you going?”
“To ask my father why he allowed my mother to die believing her daughter never came home.”
Dad was watching television when I entered his room at the nursing facility.
“Emelia. You’re early this week.”
Without answering, I placed the wooden sunflower on his tray.
His expression changed immediately.
“Where did you get that?”
“Did you see Laura after 1986?”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
I spread the sunflower sweater across his lap.
“She came back.”
Dad turned his face away.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“When?”
His shoulders sagged.
“1992.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“Was she alone?”
“No.”
“She had a little girl.”
Dad shut his eyes.
“Dolly.”
His eyes opened again.
“You met her?”
“Yes.”
Something almost like relief crossed his face.
It made me furious.
“What happened?”
“Emelia, this was decades ago.”
“For you.”
I pulled a chair directly in front of him.
“I learned about it today. Tell me.”
Dad stared at the wooden sunflower.
“Your mother was away. Laura knocked on the door. She said she wanted to come home.”
My throat closed.
“And what did you tell her?”
“Your mother had finally started sleeping again. You had moved out. Things were beginning to settle.”
“Settle?”
“People had stopped talking.”
“About Thomas?”
Dad looked down.
“About everything. Laura leaving. The embarrassment. Me not being able to control my own daughter.”
I stared at him.
“Control?”
“That isn’t what I meant.”
“That is exactly what you said.”
His gaze stayed lowered.
“Laura had made her choice.”
“At sixteen.”
“She understood what she was doing.”
“No sixteen-year-old understands what forty years feels like.”
He flinched.
“What happened the night she left?”
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“I caught her at the gate with Thomas. I told her to come back inside.”
“And when she refused?”
His voice cracked.
“I told her that if she walked away with him, she shouldn’t expect to come back.”
My eyes burned.
“You said that to your sixteen-year-old daughter?”
“I didn’t believe she would actually go.”
“But she did. And six years later, she came back anyway.”
Dad covered his face.
I refused to let the conversation end there.
“What did you tell her in 1992?”
“I said she couldn’t simply return and rip open everyone’s wounds again.”
“Did Mom say that?”
“No.”
“Did I?”
“No.”
“Did Laura?”
“No.”
I leaned toward him.
“Then who exactly were you protecting?”
“All of you.”
“No.”
“Emelia…”
“You were protecting yourself. You didn’t want to admit that you had been wrong.”
His mouth trembled.
“I was ashamed.”
“I know.”
And that was almost the worst part.
I could understand how one terrible decision, followed by pride and shame, had turned into decades of silence.
But understanding it didn’t mean I could forgive it.
“Did Laura ask about me?”
Dad looked down.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“What did she ask?”
“She wanted to know if you blamed her.”
“And what did you tell her?”
“That you had suffered because of what she did.”
I stared at him.
“Did you tell her I searched for her?”
“No.”
“Did you tell her Mom never stopped searching?”
“No.”
“Did you tell her I would have opened that door for her?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
I stood.
“You didn’t protect us, Dad. You spoke for us.”
He started crying.
At ninety years old, he suddenly looked smaller than I had ever seen him.
Most of my life, seeing him that way would have made me stop.
Not that day.
“I love you.”
He looked up.
“But loving you doesn’t make what you did less terrible.”
“I thought I was saving the family.”
“You saved yourself from one uncomfortable conversation and left the rest of us with forty years of questions.”
He had nothing to say.
When I reached the door, he called after me.
“Emelia.”
I stopped.
“Are you coming back tomorrow?”
My hand remained on the handle.
“I don’t know.”
Then I walked out.
The following morning, I personally drove Sophie to school.
“Is this about Dolly?” she asked.
“Yes. But none of this happened because you did anything wrong.”
After Sophie went inside, I waited near the entrance.
Dolly appeared about ten minutes later.
“Emelia.”
“I need five minutes.”
We began walking.
“How did things go with your father?”
“He admitted Laura came back in 1992.”
Dolly released a long breath.
“He told me what he said to her too.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
I stopped.
“But Dad being wrong doesn’t automatically make Laura right.”
Dolly looked at me.
“He was the reason she stayed away.”
“He was one reason.”
“Emelia…”
“No. I’m not asking you to defend her.”
That silenced her.
“Laura was sixteen when she left. I can understand a sixteen-year-old making a terrible decision.”
Dolly lowered her eyes.
“But she didn’t stay sixteen forever. She was twenty-two when she came home. Then she was thirty. Then forty.”
“She was ashamed.”
“So was I.”
“She thought you hated her.”
“She didn’t know that. She never asked me.”
Dolly said nothing.
“Mom carries guilt for that.”
“She should. Dad doesn’t get every ounce of blame simply because he’s easier to be angry with.”
After a moment, Dolly nodded.
“You’re right.”
“Does Laura know what you did with the sweater?”
“She does now. She was furious.”
“Good.”
“She cried too.”
“Good.”
Dolly looked surprised.
“That doesn’t fix anything.”
“No.”
I hesitated.
“Did she ask about me?”
“All night.”
I laughed softly.
“That’s about forty years too late.”
Dolly reached into her coat and pulled out a small piece of paper.
“This is her phone number.”
I looked at it but didn’t take it.
“She wants you to call.”
“Of course she does.”
“Do you want me to tell her no?”
I thought about Dad closing the door in Laura’s face in 1992.
Then I thought about Laura spending the following thirty-four years allowing that one closed door to speak for me.
“No.”
Dolly waited.
“Tell her I know what Dad did. I know why she originally left. And I also know she had many years when she could have reached out to me herself.”
Dolly nodded.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”
This time, I took the paper.
Her eyebrows rose.
“I’m not calling her.”
“Then why take the number?”
“Because I’m finished letting other people decide what I’m allowed to know.”
I folded the paper and placed it inside my purse.
“If Laura wants to see me, she can come to me.”
“I’ll tell her.”
“And Dolly?”
She stopped.
“Don’t involve Sophie in something like this again.”
“I won’t.”
“Good.”
Three weeks passed.
Laura never came.
Oddly enough, it hurt less than I expected.
Maybe because this time, at least, I finally knew the truth.
During those weeks, I visited Dad once.
For the first time in years, he said Laura’s name without lowering his voice.
I still didn’t forgive him.
On Sunday afternoon, Sophie sat at my kitchen table coloring while the sunflower sweater rested beside me.
“Grandma?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you still waiting for your sister?”
I looked at the brown sunflower petal Mom had once wanted to redo.
“No.”
Sophie frowned.
“But don’t you want her to come?”
“I do.”
“Then aren’t you waiting?”
I smiled at her.
“No, sweetheart. There’s a difference between leaving the door open and spending your whole life standing in the doorway.”
I carefully folded Laura’s sweater.
For forty years, her absence had shaped my life.
Dad had made one terrible decision.
Laura had made many more afterward.
