Three days after I lost my job, Mom texted, “Your brother needs the apartment more than you do.” When I got home, his boxes were already in my bedroom, and Dad calmly said, “You’re unemployed. You can stay with a friend.”

“What’s that?”

“The key.”

“You already returned it.”

“Another copy.”

Of course there had been another one.

My stomach tightened.

“Your father had it in his desk.”

I took it.

“Any others?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

“For the key?”
