Three hours before my wedding, I returned home for my father’s watch and overheard my fiancé and his mother talking. They were supposed to be at the hotel. Ten minutes later, I canceled everything and what I did next terrified them.

“You intended to marry me today,” I said, “while discussing how you could gain control over my property.”

Daniel swallowed.

“That isn’t what you heard.”

I pressed play on my phone.

His own voice filled the conference room.

“Once the papers are signed, the house and the company access become my problem—not hers.”
