I heard rapid typing.

“No.”
“Who is with you?”
“No one. Julian left with his mother and Maya four hours ago. He took my phone and passport. My return flight was canceled yesterday.”
Martin stopped typing for a moment.
“Did you authorize Maya to leave without you?”
“No.”
“Did you give Julian permission to take your passport or phone?”
“No.”
Another pause.
Then his voice became steady.
“Understood. Stay at the hotel. Do not contact Julian if you find another way to reach him. Do not tell anyone connected to him that you have reached us.”
“What about Maya?”
“We’re dealing with that now.”
I swallowed.
“Julian believes he can use her to pressure me into surrendering my equity in the firm.”
“That needs to be documented.”
“He’s already on the way to the United States.”
“That helps.”
I stared at the phone.
“Helps?”
“It means we know where he is for the next several hours.”
For the first time that morning, my breathing slowed.
Julian believed he had removed every option.

No ticket.
But he did not know about Blue Lantern.
Martin continued.

He verified my identity and handed me temporary travel documents, a secure phone, local currency, and a first-class ticket leaving Phuket within hours.
I stared at everything.
“You arranged all this already?”
“Your company takes international incidents seriously.”
Apparently, it did.
Later, sitting in the airport lounge, I placed Evelyn’s note beside my coffee.

They had assumed that taking my identification and phone would erase my ability to act.

I closed my eyes.

He walked toward international arrivals carrying a sleeping Maya.
Evelyn was beside him, sunglasses on, moving through the terminal as though the trip had gone exactly as planned.
In Julian’s mind, it probably had.
He believed I was stranded thousands of miles away without identification or communication.
By the time I contacted an embassy, replaced my passport, found money, and booked another flight, he assumed days or weeks would pass.
That would give him time to create his own version of events.
He could claim I had stayed behind voluntarily.
He could tell people I abandoned Maya.

Then he reached the arrivals exit.
His confidence disappeared.
Waiting nearby were federal officers, local investigators, a child-services caseworker, legal representatives, and Martin Shaw in a charcoal suit.
Julian stopped.
Evelyn almost walked into him.
One officer stepped forward.
“Julian Vance?”
Julian looked around.
“Yes?”
“We need to speak with you regarding the international removal of a child and missing identification documents.”
Julian immediately shook his head.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Evelyn pushed forward.
“My daughter-in-law abandoned us in Phuket. She chose to stay there.”
Martin opened a tablet.
The hotel footage began playing.
The screen showed Julian accessing the room before dawn, removing my passport and phone, and leaving with Maya.
Additional records showed when my return ticket had been canceled.
Evelyn’s expression changed.
The resort manager had also provided a written statement documenting the reservation change.
Their story suddenly had a serious problem.

Julian stared at the tablet.
Then he looked around the terminal.
“Where is Nora?”
I stepped forward.
“I’m right here.”
He turned toward me so quickly that he nearly stumbled.
For several seconds, neither he nor Evelyn spoke.

I said nothing.

His jaw tightened.

Six months later, sunlight filled the windows of my new California home.
Maya ran across the lawn chasing a yellow butterfly while I sat outside with a cup of coffee.
Martin stepped onto the patio holding a thin folder.
He handed it to me.
“Everything is signed and filed.”
I looked down at the final dissolution documents.
Martin smiled.
“You’re officially free.”
I looked toward Maya.
She was laughing, both hands reaching toward the butterfly.
