My parents said there was no room for me at our annual family retreat—then invited 118 people, including all six of my siblings and their families. I didn’t argue or beg. I stayed quiet. Nine hours later, Mom was screaming.

My phone rang.

Mom.

This time, I answered.

“Are you at the house?” she demanded.
“Yes.”

“We need to talk.”

“You had plenty of chances to talk.”

“We made a mistake.”

That surprised me.

My mother rarely admitted mistakes.

Then she added,

“But what you did was worse.”

There it was.
