I stared at him.

He nodded.

He thought for a moment.
“The husband told me to get their car immediately.”
Then he frowned.
“He was on the phone. I heard him say something like, ‘Call the hospital. Tell them we’re coming.’”
Hospital.
My heart started racing.
Jett grabbed his keys.
“I’m coming with you.”
“No.”
“Laura, you have no idea who these people are.”
“That’s exactly why I have to go.”
For four months, I had waited.

I described the couple.

“Does she look like this?”
The receptionist studied Mom’s picture.

Then she softened.
“But the age and general description are similar.”
“That’s her.”
I knew it.

Then the receptionist said something that made the situation even more urgent.

“I’m her daughter.”
She hesitated.

The elevator took forever.
A nurse met me on the third floor and led me down a quiet corridor.
Then we stopped outside room 318.
Through the narrow window, I saw them.
The couple from Bellamy’s.
The woman was still wearing the same green dress, although now it was wrinkled.
Her husband’s silver hair was messy.
They no longer looked polished or wealthy.
They looked exhausted.
I pushed the door open.
The woman turned around.
Her eyes immediately dropped to the plastic bag in my hand.
“That ring,” she whispered.
I stepped closer.
“Where did you get it?”
Her husband raised both hands.
“Please. The patient needs quiet.”
“You had my mother’s ring.”
The woman stared at me.
“Your mother?”
I looked toward the bed.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

They stopped.

Then they followed it to the hospital.
Margaret looked toward my mother.

My eyes filled with tears.

My voice broke.

Then I heard movement.
Mom’s fingers twitched against the blanket.
Her eyelids slowly opened.

Then her eyes found me.
I stopped breathing.
Her forehead creased.
She stared as though trying to pull my face from somewhere deep inside a fog.
Then she whispered one word.
“Laura?”

I bent over the bed, laughing and crying at the same time.
“Yes.”

Her weak hand lifted toward my face.
She touched my cheek.
“I knew you were somewhere,” she whispered. “I just couldn’t remember how to get back.”

Then I carefully slid it onto her finger.
It was loose now.

So she curled her fingers around my hand to keep it from slipping off.

I squeezed her hand.
“I will.”

Thomas wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
