A quiet sense of sorrow has filled the White House as Jill Biden and her family grieve the loss of their longtime dog, Champ. At 13 years old, the German Shepherd was far more than a pet—he was a constant, comforting presence throughout years of public duty and private family life, offering steadiness during both historic events and personal moments.
Champ first joined the Bidens in 2008, around the time Joe Biden became vice president. From that point on, he remained by their side through various stages of life, including their time at the Naval Observatory and later in the White House. Known for his gentle nature and unwavering loyalty, he became part of the household’s everyday routine—welcoming guests, resting through busy workdays, and quietly staying close during stressful times.
As he aged, Champ’s health slowly declined, and the family eventually made the compassionate decision to allow him a peaceful passing. It is a choice many pet owners recognize, reflecting the difficult balance between love and preventing suffering. In remembering him, the Bidens have also highlighted the profound connection between people and their pets, a bond Jill Biden has often described with sincerity and affection.
Expressions of sympathy have poured in from across the country, with many sharing their own experiences of losing beloved animals. Although the family still has their younger dog, Commander, Champ’s role in their lives remains irreplaceable. His memory endures not only in public photographs but in the quiet, steady companionship he provided—a reminder of the lasting impact animals can have through their simple, faithful presence.
