I stepped inside.

The beach house wasn’t a mansion. It had weathered cedar, blue shutters, sandy floors, and a porch swing that squeaked in the wind. Grandpa built it before I was born. After he died, Grandma Ruth began forgetting little things. Stove knobs. Bills. Neighbors’ names.
But she never forgot that house.
She called it “the place where everyone came back.”
That was why I placed it in a trust.

I was the trustee. Grandma remained the lifetime resident. No one could sell, borrow against, or transfer the property while she lived unless a doctor, a lawyer, and I all approved.
Carter hated it.
For months, he called me greedy. Melanie accused me of “acting superior” because I worked in estate compliance. Mom told me to stop treating family like criminals.
Then, last night, Grandma’s caregiver texted me.
Something feels wrong. Melanie dismissed me early. Carter brought paperwork.
I drove three hours before sunrise.
Now Carter stood between me and the table, wearing a confident smile as if that could make him innocent.
“You’re overreacting,” he said. “Grandma wants to help family.”
Grandma whispered, “I don’t want to leave.”
The room fell silent.
Carter’s jaw tightened. “She’s confused.”
“No,” I said, opening my work bag. “You are.”

His eyes flickered.

When Grandma returned, she looked exhausted, but her voice remained steady.
