Minutes before our wedding, I saw my fiancée kick my mother’s cane away and send her crashing to the floor. I caught Mom in my arms and shouted, “Are you insane?” My bride straightened her veil and snapped, “She fell on her own. Don’t ruin my day.” I looked at the guests, then at the woman I almost married. “The wedding is canceled,” I said—and she had no idea what I planned to take from her next.

“You’re right,” I whispered to him, loud enough for the microphone to catch it. “You have no idea what you’re losing.”

I pulled my wedding ring from my pocket, placed it on the podium, and walked out of the life they thought they owned.
