I arrived early to my brother’s Christmas Eve dinner and found my son sitting alone in the garage with a gas station sandwich. After he told me what Aunt Victoria had said, I walked inside, knocked over the champagne tower, and the entire room went silent.

I put him on speaker.

His voice sounded shaken.

“Mark, I found something in Victoria’s office.”

“What?”

“A folder with invoices from Miller & Pine.”

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“What invoices?”

“The October gala.”

He paused.

“And two other events.”

“I never billed the foundation for the gala.”
