I arrived early to my brother’s Christmas Eve dinner and found my son sitting alone in the garage with a gas station sandwich. After he told me what Aunt Victoria had said, I walked inside, knocked over the champagne tower, and the entire room went silent.

I went quiet.

“So she had already decided he wouldn’t sit with everyone?”

“Yes.”

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“She had already decided how the evening would work.”

That was all I needed to know.
