My daughter went away to scout camp for a week, and I was so happy when she sent me a photo — but after I looked at it more closely, I frantically called the camp.

Something cold settled inside my chest.

“Why?”

“I really can’t answer that.”

I left work.

The camp was a little over an hour away, and I spent most of the drive trying to talk myself out of every terrible possibility my mind invented.

By the time I arrived, I had mostly convinced myself that Ava was physically safe.
But that wasn’t the same as believing everything was fine.
